Description:
| Scotland's third oldest institution dates back to two colleges. In 1495 the Bishop of Aberdeen created King's College and modeled it after those in Paris and Bologna. Faculties of Arts, Theology and Canon and Civil Law were established as was a 'chair' of medicine two years later. In 1593, the fourth Earl Marischal, with the help of local merchants, established Marischal College. These universities became one in 1860. A rich history of educational growth has been built on the foundations of these early schools.
Today, ancient buildings (the famous Crown Tower and King's College Chapel) and modern facilities (laboratories, computing complexes, and libraries) exist side by side.
The University offers over 1400 courses in seven faculties. It is known worldwide for its department of biological science, its research facilities, and its mission to contribute to society in a regional, national, and international context. Indeed, four scholars have received Nobel prizes for work begun or done at the University, and research at Aberdeen contributed to the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. There are over 100 clubs and societies, a well equipped recreation center, health and support services, an active Students' Union which serves as social hub, and a number of museums. Theater and music are integral components of campus life.
The student body of over 9,000 undergraduates includes students representing 94 nationalities.
The University provides a variety of excellent accommodations on and off campus, with and without self-catering options. All have single study bedrooms. You will find a number of conveniences (central heat, laundries, games rooms, common rooms, shops, and snack bars) in the main living areas.
The University is located in picturesque Old Aberdeen, whose streets of stately granite houses remind us of the seventh, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. The City of Aberdeen is a cultural hub for the northeast of Scotland, attracting symphony and chamber orchestras, major popular music groups, and pre- and post- London productions of drama and musicals. Museums, parks, and golf courses are found in the city. Aberdeen is well known for its lovely and bright floral displays in every green space. It is a starting point for travel to the valley of the River Dee where castles and museums can be explored.
The countryside--beautiful and varied-- provides opportunities for many outdoor activities such a cycling, climbing, sailing, walking, and bird-watching.
Excellent road, rail, and air systems allow you to travel easily to other cities in Scotland, Wales, England, Ireland, and the Continent.
