Description:
| Throughout Central Europe, people and nations face challenges as they work to adapt to rapidly-changing regional and global realities.
The countries of the region are looking, and being pulled, westward, toward the European Union, an expanded NATO and Western popular culture. At the same time, legacies of the past -- such as the communist and feudal-aristocratic social orders, and longstanding cultural, social and religious divisions within the region -- are not easily erased.
In name, at least, democratization and free market reforms have swept across Central Europe. However, political and economic changes have occured in varying degrees, and the promised benefits have often been slow to appear, or even nonexistent.
The ACM Central European Studies Program, based at Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, offers a firsthand opportunity to engage in case studies of cultural and social transformation on national and regional levels.
The program’s field trips throughout Central Europe combine with the course work to provide a perspective on the political, cultural, artistic and historical heritage of the region. Students are encouraged to explore their individual interests in history, politics, environmental issues, architecture, the arts and literature.
Language instruction, field experiences, housing with Czech students in university dormitories and the possibility of brief stays with Czech families also bring participants into close contact with contemporary Czech culture. | |
