Description:
| The art and history of the Italian Renaissance can be studied many places. Only in Florence, though, does the rich interaction between Medieval Europe and classical antiquity — the embodiment of the Renaissance — truly come alive. Wandering through the winding streets and famous piazze, visitors are struck by the harmonious blending of medieval public buildings, Renaissance churches and swirling baroque decoration. Prestigious museums, such as the Uffizi, also provide unmatched resources for the study of painting, architecture and sculpture.
The ACM Florence Program takes full advantage of Florence’s rich artistic heritage. The Italian Renaissance is the center of the academic program, with opportunities to view firsthand many influential masterpieces of Western civilization. Students are guided by experts in the history of art and culture, learn to speak Italian, and have the chance to draw under the direction of a master in a traditional atelier. Course work includes frequent visits to museums and monuments, as well as lectures by local scholars and art conservation specialists. Students and instructors will spend several days in Rome and Venice. Field trips to other cities studied in the courses may include Pisa and Siena. Courses are rigorous and include significant research and analysis presented in scholarly papers and discussions.
Living in an Italian household in Florence greatly enriches the students’ understanding of contemporary Italian life. This personal experience also provides an excellent opportunity to practice Italian outside the classroom and acquire basic language skills required for daily living. | |
