Description:
| With its emphasis on everyday contact with Russians and location outside the Westernizing influences found in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the ACM Russia Program offers an open door to Russian culture. In Krasnodar, the site of the program, students observe the nuances of Russian life through the eyes of Russians.
The capital of the Kuban region, Krasnodar was founded 200 years ago as the southern gateway to the Russian empire. The city retains a strong regional identity as a center of Cossack culture, as well as a deep-rooted sense of “Russianness.” With a growing population of one million and a setting in the midst of a vast agricultural area, Krasnodar has both major industry and intimate connections to rural life. The city is a crossroads with areas to the south and east, and businesspeople, visitors and refugees from the newly-independent republics of the Caucasus are visible in Krasnodar’s streets and markets.
The city’s traditional culture remains alive through folk centers and festivals and the renowned Kuban Cossack Choir. For entertainment, there are also museums, concerts, live theatre and nightclubs. The Philharmonia has regular classical and folk music performances and the ballet company maintains a full schedule. Krasnodar also provides insights into ideas about urban design and architectural styles during different Soviet periods.
Students learn their way around the city as they explore community activities, shop, meet friends, go on field trips, and pursue their independent study projects. | |
