Description:
| From the moment they arrive in San José, students on the fall semester Studies in Latin American Culture and Society are immersed in daily life in Costa Rica. They live with families in the city and study Spanish in small classes taught by native speakers. They undertake independent research on contemporary social and political issues. They explore this beautiful, diverse country during a two-week stay in a rural area and on excursions and field trips.
Throughout the program, language study is stressed as the key to an in-depth understanding of a culture. The rest of the interdisciplinary curriculum, including student research, focuses on issues facing all of Central America -- economic growth vs. ecological responsibility; traditional culture vs. modernized society; and political stability vs. human rights. The ACM center, located near the University of Costa Rica, provides a Spanish-only environment with classrooms, library and computer facilities. | |
