Description: “Societies in Transformation—Europe and South Africa” This ISEP-Direct (fee-paid) program combines a semester of study at the University of Leiden, Netherlands, with a semester of study at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Both institutions offer courses taught in English as well as language courses in Dutch and Afrikaans, which are closely related. During the first semester, at Leiden, students study the history and culture of Europe in general and the Netherlands in particular, explore contemporary Dutch and European society, and attend an introductory session on South Africa. During the second semester at Stellenbosch, students can choose courses in the history, culture, politics and economics of South Africa (as well as others from the wide range of courses taught in English at Stellenbosch) and experience first-hand the profound changes transforming post-apartheid South Africa. Both institutions offer a wide variety of courses in a multicultural environment and opportunities for comparative studies in several disciplines. Students may compose their own academic program to suit their personal interests. Other study options in Africa include the University of Ghana, and the Leiden-Cario Egyptology/Archaeology program. ISEP offers exchanges and programs in 33 countries. Study in a different language or take classes taught in English. ISEP is a member organization of more than 230 institutions in the United States and abroad. To find out if your university is a member of ISEP, visit the ISEP Web site (www.isep.org).
