Description: The University of Wisconsin-Stout is offering an Intensive Spanish Language program in cooperation with the Instituto Technologio y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). This six-week program provides participants with an opportunity to improve their Spanish language skills, get acquainted with students and families in Mexico, and learn more about Mexican culture. The program is offered at two different ITESM campuses in Mexico so participants can choose the location best suited to their interests. The summer program is an intensive language experience. Students spend 23 hours per week in class. Morning classes run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Afternoons are available for work in the language lab, conversation groups with Mexican students, local field trips, and recreation. A swimming pool, lounge, fitness center and playing fields are available for use on each campus. There are optional trips on weekends or during the five day break to such locations as Mexico City, Acapulco, Taxco, Puebla and Teotihuacan at a small additional cost. ITESM is a private university in Mexico enrolling about 20,000 students on 26 different campuses. Currently, UW-Stout sends students to two of these campuses for intensive language study. Cuernavaca: This campus has about 2,000 students and is located in Cuernavaca, a beautiful city of 500,000 people, located in the mountains about one hour from Mexico City. Known as the "City of Eternal Spring" because of its mild climate, it is an ideal site from which to explore the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacan and Taxco, Acapulco and Mexico City. Family placements and the small size of this program make it the best location for students who want to be immersed in Mexican culture and language. Monterrey: With 14,000 students, this campus is the largest in the ITESM system and has the most extensive course offerings for summer students with more advanced language skills. Monterrey, the capital of the state of Nuevo Leon, was founded in the sixteenth century on a plain in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains about 150 miles from Laredo, Texas. A city of four million, it is Mexico's leading center of industry. Its museums, historic sites, theaters, arenas, and commercial center offer students access to Mexico's rich cultural life.
