Description:
| The Brazil program offers an outstanding opportunity to experience the wonders of Brazil as students study about the country's culture, history, and language. The program will last four weeks. The first destination will be the historic gold mining town of Pirenópolis. Listed on the National Heritage Register for Brazil, Pirenópolis is a picturesque colonial town surrounded by patches of rainforest, cerrado (scrub forest), and crystal clear waterfalls. Although the gold has long been mined out, Pirenópolis is today considered to be the silver capital of Brazil. Over a ten-day period, students will be introduced to Brazilian culture, language, and history as well as the natural environment of the surrounding area. Several excursions are planned--a trip to the national capital of Brasília, a three-day trip to the river town of Aruanã (including a boat ride on the Araguaia River, a major tributary of the Amazon River), and several half-day trips trekking through the local rainforest and cerrado of Pirenópolis. The second destination is the coastal city of Niterói which is located just minutes away from downtown Rio de Janeiro. Here students will enjoy home stays with Brazilian families while exploring the many sites of Rio, a city world- renowned for its beautiful setting between the ocean and escarpment. Rio boasts many fine museums, parks, monuments, beaches, nightclubs, soccer teams, samba schools, and the world's largest urban rainforest. During the ten-day stay in Niterói, several excursions are planned--visits to Sugar Loaf and Corcovado and a trip to the Imperial city of Petrópolis where the Emperor of Brazil maintained his summer palace. | |
