Description:
| The KIIS China program offers an unparalleled opportunity for Americans to gain a better understanding of this vast country. The program will take place in four different cities: Hong Kong, Kunming, Xi'an, and Beijing. The majority of the time will be spent in the southwestern city of Kunming. A bustling city of approximately three million inhabitants, Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province. Located on a high plateau, surrounded by mountains and on the shores of one of China's largest lakes, Kunming, unlike much of the country, has traditional, two-story dwellings and shady lanes which coexist with skyscrapers and busy divided highways. The program will last six weeks. For the first several days of the program, students will explore the former British colony of Hong Kong and recover from jet lag. Students will then travel on to Kumning for one month of study on the campus of Yunnan Normal University, located a 25-minute walk from the city center. Outings will be arranged to places of cultural, historic, and scenic interest both in the city and its environs. These will include temples, museums, markets, concerts, and nearby villages and towns, including the walled city of Dali and the city of Lijiang, designated by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site. Students will travel to the cities of Xi'an and Beijing for the final ten days of the program. In Xi'an, students will spend several days viewing such sights as the world famous terra cotta army of Qin Shihuang, China's first emperor. Students will then spend approximately six days touring Beijing. This portion of the program will include visits to the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, and Tienanmen Square. | |
