Description:
| Because Santorini continues to be such an extraordinary painting adventure, we’ll return there this summer, and also visit our very
popular site of Olymbos on the Dodecanese island of Karpathos. Manuel Theodore and Libbie Nead, painters and travelers throughout Greece since 1978, will take participants to Santorini to experience the unique volcanic geology, the distinctive whitewashed architecture perched precipitously on the caldera high above the sea and the shimmering golden sunsets. This justly famous Cycladic gem in the Aegean is Greece’s most visited island. It’s believed by some to have been ancient Atlantis. On Santorini, students tour Akrotiri, a town that was buried and preserved in ash in the eruption of 1500 B.C.
The second venture of this four-week program will be Olymbos, Karpathos. The village of Olymbos rests on the side of a mountain where sea breezes turn the canvas sails of old windmills and the villagers still wear traditional dress and maintain Byzantine customs. Painting there allows a view of a bygone Greece that few visitors are fortunate enough to see, and each year our group is embraced and moved by the hospitality of this village. Excursions by private boat around the island include early-Christian archaeological sites, as well as painting venues on deserted beaches.
In addition to the time spent painting on the islands, several free days are provided in Athens for independent visits to the Acropolis, National Archaeological Museum and other points of interest.
