Description:
| The program focuses on the challenges and opportunities for U.S. businesses in Japan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. We explore differences in management practices, working conditions, management relations, and the relationship between the corporation and society at large including such issues as environmental protection, product liability, discrimination, and more generally, corporate social responsibility and business ethics. Although a Pamplin College of Business program, it is designed to appeal not only to business students, but to students in other disciplines as well. The precise itinerary of organizations to be visited is still to be determined. Organizations visited in the past include: Toyota, Toshiba, Canon, Shiseido, Nike, Suntory, Omron, Mazda, Mitsui, Daiei, Asahi Mutual Life, MITI, General Electric, American Chamber of Commerce of Japan (breakfast meeting with U. S. executives in Japan), Coca Cola, Texas Instruments, Walt Disney Enterprises, McDonalds, Medtronics, JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization), Liberty Mutual, the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Hershey of Japan, Hiroshima Shudo University, NCR, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation. Prior to departure we will visit a Japanese business firm in Virginia and we will have several class meetings covering course content, including language and culture training. Special provisions regarding pre-departure activities will be made for program participants who do not live in the Blacksburg area. | |
