Description:
| Experience Latvian life—a unique blend of Baltic and Slavic cultures—by living with a host family; attending school; and participating in school, community, and AFS-organized activities. The school year runs from September through the end of May and is divided into two terms with vacations in mid-October, at Christmas, and at Easter. Core subjects include Latvian or Russian language and literature, depending upon the school in which you are placed, as well as history, math, foreign languages, and physical training. You may also choose from many electives in the arts and sciences.
Extracurricular activities include swimming, dancing, basketball, tae kwon do, track, music, drama, crafts, and more. On weekends you might join your host family or friends on trips to the country. You may also have the opportunity to visit Estonia and Lithuania, two of the newly independent Baltic nations, and AFS sponsors visits to Riga, the capital of Latvia.
