Description:
| The program will begin in Greece, where we will spend the first six days. From there, we will travel to Sicily to visit major Greek and Roman theatre ruins and attend theatrical productions in them. The tour will continue in southern Italy as we work our way up to Naples, Pompeii, Rome, Siena, Florence, Verona, Venice, and Vicenza. The final portion of the trip will be based in London.
This program is designed to explore the cultural and social history of specific Greek, Italian, and English cultures, the dramatic literature and visual arts produced by that culture, and the changing methods of presenting theatrical productions and visual forms from the 5th Century BC through the Italian and English Renaissance. Through the process of reading plays, attending theatrical productions, and visiting various historically significant performance venues, museums, and galleries, the student will be introduced to the influences that have shaped the evolution of the theatrical and visual expressions of western art. No prerequisites are required for this program. All participants will enroll in Theatre Arts 3105, History of Drama and Theatre (3 credits).
It may be possible to arrange Independent Studies for additional credits. Faculty permission is required and arrangements for the study must be completed prior to course registration.
