Description:
| AUBG invites qualified undergraduate students to enroll on a visiting basis, for a semester or academic year. The Study Abroad program is most appropriate for individuals with a specific interest in the Southeast European region, History or Political Science, or a discipline which is in transition in Southeast Europe, such as Economics, Journalism - Mass Communication, Business Administration or Computer Science. However, any student may apply. To meet eligibility requirements, students should have completed at least one full year at their home institution, ordinarily have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and a letter from an advisor attesting to their preparedness for such an experience.
Similar to small, liberal arts colleges in the U.S., AUBG provides a wide array of student services to provide for a smooth transition to life in Bulgaria. The Office of Student Services employs a Director of Residential Life, Resident Advisors, an International Student Coordinator and both Bulgarian and American staff psychologists available for counselling. An in-depth Orientation Program is conducted in the U.S. prior to departure of Study Abroad participants, and an International Student Orientation is held for all non-Bulgarian students during the week before classes begin.
Most courses at AUBG carry three credit hours each and are graded on a range from A to F, with averages calculated on a 4.0 scale for ease of transfer to most U.S. institutions. Assignments are generally given on a daily basis, with writing assignments, midterm and final examinations when appropriate. In keeping with AUBG's mission of promoting analytic reasoning, individual thought and independent research, classes are typically small, with active student participation and instructor feedback. The AUBG curriculum is overseen by a special committee at the University of Maine, which approves courses and programs in accordance with the criteria set forth by the New England Association of Colleges and Schools.
