Since 1969 the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has provided extraordinary study/travel programs in East-Central Europe for those who seek an enriched and enhanced education beyond the bounds of the classroom or campus. This new semester abroad for 2003 is situated in Szeged, Hungary. It offers you the exceptional opportunity to take classes, in English, through the Hungary & East-Central Europe International Studies Centre (HUECESC) of the University of Szeged (in Hungarian: Szegedi Tudományegyetem), Hungary.
The program is designed to communicate Hungarian Studies and contextual subjects to interested foreigners. The Hungarian language is offered in an intensive form and various courses related to Hungary and East-Central Europe are available. Besides offering traditional cultural subjects such as history, literature, folklore and arts, they also cover East-European economics, sociology, current politics, etc. The HUECESC maintains ties with the local administration and small businesses in the region, representatives of which are also involved in our courses as regular or guest lecturers. Numerous field trips, in fact a whole course called "Hungary at Large" provide international students like you with direct contacts and "real life" experiences. History is currently being made in Hungary - experience it! Realize: the little known and fabulous cultures, the reality of a state planned economy in transformation to a western style market economy. Classes include offered upper division classes concentrating on the Humanities and Social Sciences: Conversational/Survival, Intermediate and Advanced Hungarian Language (no prior knowledge of Hungarian is required), Art History, Culture, Civilization and History of Hungary; East European Politics, Geography, Literature, International Studies. Small classes, taught by Hungarian faculty in English, provide individual attention. Study tours within Hungary throughout the semester may include: Budapest, Pecs,
Mohacs (Danube Folklore Festival), Holloko, Pannonhalma, Hortobagy, Szentendre, etc.
