Description: Participants will experience contrasting forms of architecture and crafts through the comparison of that which is made by ordinary people (vernacular architecture and folk art) and that produced by trained individuals -- for example, the imperial architecture of the Forbidden City in Beijing contrasted with the hutongs (old neighborhoods of the common people) or the art of court-inspired silk embroidery contrasted with the cotton textiles of the country people. Students will have the opportunity to climb the Great Wall, ride a camel on a portion of the old Silk Road, view the life-sized terra-cotta soldiers excavated at the burial site of China’s first emperor near Xi’an, visit the Magao Caves at Dunhuang and a Buddhist monastery in Tibet. For additional contrast, the arts and architecture of China’s minority cultures in Southwest China will be explored. The program fee includes airfare from Chicago and return, all lodging, most breakfasts and lunches, some dinners, group ground transportation, most entrance fees and three undergraduate Wisconsin resident credits. Surcharge for non-residents. This seminar will benefit all who share an interest in Chinese architecture, design and culture. Students (in good academic standing) from all disciplines and of any class standing are WELCOME to participate.
