Description:
| Located equidistant between China and India, in the center of Southeast Asia, Thailand shares strong cultural affinities with both countries. Although Thailand has fascinated foreigners for centuries as part of the former Kingdom of Siam, it has remained relatively isolated until this century.
With its ornately decorated wats and museums dedicated to Lanna culture, Chiang Mai was the Lanni Thai capital from the 13th to 18th centuries. Today, this city offers a beguiling blend of ancient ruins, local crafts and continuing traditions. Its population has grown in the current century to about 200,000, reflecting a mosaic of peoples and cultures deeply rooted in Theravedic Buddhist culture, grappling with issues of modernization and cultural preservation.
