Description:
| Whether you're a beginner who's never held a paintbrush or a M.F.A. student in art, American University's Art in Italy program will inspire your creativity and renew your passion for the fine arts. Imagine spending a semester in the beautiful, medieval hill town of Corciano, Italy, located midway between Florence and Rome.
Study under the guidance of our faculty, which consists of American and Italian artists, visiting artists, and historians. There are options for studying art history, contemporary critical theory, and Italian language at all levels. Studios focused courses in painting, printmaking, sculpture, and drawing, as well as workshops with Italian craftsmen in techniques such as fresco and tempera are also offered.
Because of its central location and access to both public transportation and the central railway in nearby Perugia, students see much more of Italy than just Corciano. In addition to working in the studios you will visit the frescoes by Giotto in nearby Assisi; the magnificent cathedral in Siena; the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel in Rome; works by Michelangelo, Donatello and Titian in Florence; Roman and Etruscan ruins; and Medieval Carvings. Students in the program participate in several extended group outings which include a trip to Venice and an eight-day tour through southern Italy, Sicily and the Mediterranean.
Through this program you can earn a full semester of AU undergraduate or graduate credit that is easily transferrable to most colleges and universities. There is also a post baccalaureate option for students preparing to apply to graduate schools. The following courses are offered in the program: Elementary Italian, Italian Reading for Research: Italian Art and Culture, Topics in Art History, Introduction to Printmaking, Independent study: Art History, Drawing, Creative Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Independent study: Studio Art, Masters Thesis Seminar, Criticism of Painting, Art Lab: Painting, Sculpture or Printmaking.
