Description:
| If you're a student of business and economics, international relations, or Asian studies, there is no better time to be in China. The country's economy has been growing recently at one of the highest rates in the world. Now, through the World Capitals Program of American University (AU), you can take an in-depth look at what this economic boom might mean for the Chinese people, who have lived for more than 50 years under Marxist doctrine. And you can explore this fascinating culture up close regardless of whether you speak the Chinese language of Mandarin.
In classes at China's premier institution of higher learning, Beijing University, you'll explore issues such as: how the increasing openness to ideas from outside the country might affect Chinese society, whether China's leadership can forge ahead with free-market economics, and what changes will take place when a new generation assumes power.
With guidance from the full-time AU Resident Director, you and your fellow students will take a two-week field trip to southern China, including Hong Kong. You'll explore economic development and the gap between urban and rural areas. You will meet entrepreneurs and business leaders. In Hong Kong, gateway of east-west trade, you'll explore the changes taking place to the one country/two systems policy and Hong Kong's role in Asian economic development.
You earn a full semester of AU credits during the semester in Beijing and Hong Kong. These credits are transferable to most colleges and universities. The following courses are offered in the program: Intensive Chinese Language (6 credit hours), Chinese Political Economy (3 credit hours), Sino-American Relations (3 credit hours), Chinese History (3 credit hours), Internship or Independent Study Project(3 credit hours), and Modern China
(3 credit hours).
