Description:
| This program, based in Germany's capital, gives you an understanding of Germany and Berlin-a country and city that are steadily growing in importance in a changing world. Your studies are headquartered at the prestigious Freie Universität Berlin on the city's west side, where you can increase your language skills and gain work experience through an internship and German language classes. Trips to nearby cities in Central and Eastern Europe will enhance your grasp of the historical foundation and the dynamics of post-communist transformation in Europe.
As a resident of Berlin, you become part of the city's vivacious swirl of people and culture. Enjoy a rich variety of museums, opera houses, concert halls, cinemas, and theaters; a diverse contemporary music scene; and nearby forests and lakes in this unusually "green" city. Abundant night life, restaurants, and shopping plazas throughout the city turn Berlin into a festival that never closes.
As a semester in Berlin student, you earn a full semester of AU undergraduate credit. These credits are transferable to most colleges and universities. The following courses are offered in the program(not all courses are available each semester): Contemporary Germany and Berlin, International Relations in Europe, Berlin, the Holocaust, and the Nazi Legacy, Business and Economics in Post-Cold War Europe, Human Psychology and the Totalitarian Experience, Central European Cultural and Literary History, Internship, German Language, and Independent Study. The first six courses, including lectures and readings, are conducted in English; however, students with the requisite language ability may choose to write their exams and papers in German. These courses may also include German students from the Freie Universität. Language courses are taught in German, and the Independent Study option, though normally in English, also offers students with solid language skills the opportunity to increase their exposure to German. There is no German language prerequisite for the Berlin semester.
