Description: American University's Semester in Madrid takes advantage of its location in the capital of Spain. Classes are held in the College of International Studies (CIS) in the heart of town, with some special classes and events near Madrid at El Escorial, Philip II's castle which is now home to a major university. In a two-part seminar, the Director and influential guest lecturers-including politicians, journalists, artists, and writers-discuss the political, economic, social, and cultural factors affecting contemporary Spain. Excursions to sites in and around Madrid expand on the topics covered by the seminar course. Students take a lengthy field trip to Catalonia, where they speak with leaders of a region with a distinct people and language, propelled by a strong separatist movement, and Andalusia, where they observe the depth of Moorish and Semitic influences on the culture of Spain. All classes are in Spanish. In addition to the seminar, students with advanced language skills may enroll in a class with Spanish students at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, one of Spain's premier universities. Students with sufficient language ability are also eligible for an internship in Spanish, while those requiring additional language training enroll in a Spanish class appropriate to their level. Students earn a full semester of American University (AU) credit. These credits are readily transferable to other colleges and universities. The following courses are offered in the program (taught in Spanish): Madrid Seminar: Politics, Economics, and Society of Spain (8 credit hours); Spanish Civilization, Culture and Thought (4 credit hours); International Relations (4 credit hours); Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Course (3-4 credit hours); Spanish Conversation and Composition (3 credit hours). Other Possible Topics of Study Include: Foreign Policy; History; Political Science; Spanish Language; Spanish Studies.
