Description: As a program participant, you'll begin your stay in Lyon in late August or early September with a three-week orientation session known as stage. This credit-bearing course will concentrate on acquainting you with French culture and customs and sharpening your language skills. After the orientation, participants will enroll in either the Centre International d'Etudes Françaises (C.I.E.F.) for French language study or in regular university courses at one of the four participating Lyon universities. All classes are taught by French faculty members of the university. If you enroll in the C.I.E.F., you will take courses fall semester in French language, literature, and history. Depending on your level of French, you will also have the opportunity to choose at least one class from a selected list of regular university courses. During the second semester, you may opt to take more courses in the regular university. In the language classes in the C.I.E.F., your classmates will be students from Oregon and Missouri, as well as from other countries around the world. Depending on how many classes you take during each semester, you should receive approximately the same amount of credit for your year in Lyon as you would as a full-time student in Oregon. You will be registered at your home campus in the Oregon University System (OUS) and will receive credit from that institution. You should consult with your academic advisor to determine how course work done in Lyon will integrate with your home campus curriculum requirements. Equivalent course numbers have been determined by each OUS institution for many of the courses available in Lyon. These equivalents are available from your Campus Contact. Throughout your year in Lyon, you will receive assistance in academic and personal matters from the Centre Oregon, staffed by a program assistant, a graduate teaching assistant, and by the resident director, who is an Oregon faculty member.
