Description:
| This adventure offers an intense journey into the history and use of herbal medicine in Costa Rica. The first days will be spent on the Caribbean coast exploring the Bribri use of medicinal plants, the Caribbean peoples use of bush medicine, and how these two cultures have shared their valuable knowledge. There will also be time to enjoy the beach, kayak, snorkel in coral patch reefs and visit the towns of Old Harbor, Cauhita and Manzanillo.
The journey will continue inland to the Sarapiqui region to spend the day with MUSA (United Women of the Sarapiqui), a small women's co-op that grows medicinal plants for market. We will listen to the story of their struggle and spend time in their garden. Westward to Arenal, we will soak in the healing Tabacon Hot Springs and view the spectacular panorama of the active volcano and the surrounding Arenal lake region. At Fortuna Falls, we will witness the most beautiful of all Costa Rican waterfalls.
On our last day in San Jose', we will meet with the Buena Herba, an herbal practitioner who has combined Indigenous, Caribbean and European herbs in his practice, to help us make vital connections with what we have learned. We will shop in the markets, and visit museums of impressive collections of jade, gold and pre-Columbian art.
This adventure will leave you with a hands-on understanding of tropical ethnobotany, as well as providing an enriching and healing getaway for your body and soul.
