The GMU Faculty Director, Dr. Brack Brown, has lived, conducted research and led study groups in the region for more than a decade. The Czech faculty includes internationally renowned scholars who have worked with many American student groups. Research papers, exams, a journal and presentations will be part of the six credits of coursework. Hours may apply to appropriate political, public and international affairs majors or as elective credits throughout the humanities and political sciences. Credits are awarded by George Mason University. You may audit the course, but you must participate in all activities. During the Czech program, graduate and undergraduate students will attend regular classes on Central European political history, transition from Communism, and the consolidation of the democracy and market society. This year's field work will give special attention to environmental policy, a key political issue for the whole region. Visits to a variety of places outside of Prague will include lectures, seminars and site visits with leaders in many fields and permit students to see town and cities outside of the capital. While living in Prague, the "Golden City," also known as the "New Paris of Europe," there will be ample opportunities to enjoy exceptional and beautiful architecture, art, music, clubs, museums, monuments, restaurants, famous gardens, and more. Trips to nearby towns and at least one long weekend can be used for self-organized trips to Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland or Slovakia. Since we will be located in the heart of Europe, students may take advantage of Eurail or airline discounts to visit many other countries after the Czech Summer Program ends.
