Description:
| Famous for the restraint of "the stiff upper lip," the British yet produce the most magnificent spectacles in the world--from the sumptuous display of coronations, royal weddings, the daily changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, to the kitschy splendor of the Brighton Pavilion, to the colossal failure of the footbridge over the Thames.
This program will investigate the (Aristotelian) spectacular in four art forms: theater, painting, sculpture and architecture. We’ll see various British material representations of Britons and their culture, and will use seminars to reflect on questions such as how iconic objects are used in these art forms to reveal status, and how their props and scenic backdrops reveal social class and gender expectations.
