Description:
| On January 1, 2002, the euro—Europe’s first common currency since the time of the Romans--debuted in 12 European Union (EU) countries. But not in Britain. On this program, you’ll develop an understanding of this contentious political issue and hear differing viewpoints on whether EU member Britain should reconsider its decision, a year into the currency’s life.
You’ll take three courses, in which speakers representing both sides of the issue will state their cases. Euro proponents cite increased European integration, both political and economic, as an argument in favor of the currency. Euro skeptics, however, say that joining the euro system would shift political power away from London, and that the British would lose control over their own taxes, interest rates and fiscal policy.
Witness the euro’s impact firsthand, stand at the center of Britain’s central political and economic issue, and experience the passionate debate over an event of historic proportion.
