Description: As one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities, London has traditionally been a home to musical innovation and unmatched concert performances. This program will let you explore the city and its rich musical life--from its cathedrals and the compositions they inspired, to the Virgin megastore and its free concerts by acts like Robbie Williams and Air, to concerts by some of the world's best classical musicians. As you study the interplay of music and architecture, you'll tour Westminster Abbey (home to the graves of such artists as George Frederic Handel, Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens and Rudyard Kipling), Southwark Cathedral, Saint Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Cathedral, and St. Bartholomew the Great (featured in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and one of the few remaining Norman churches in London). You'll also visit some of the churches designed by Christopher Wren, one of England's most important architects. More importantly, you'll see these buildings in their everyday roles, as hosts to services and concerts. To complement your architectural and musical studies, you'll have the opportunity to experience concerts at leading London venues, including the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican. Subject to scheduling, performers include the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (Amadeus). You'll also take trips to St. Albans, a pre-Gothic Norman cathedral, and to Canterbury, site of pilgrimages; the program will also include visits to the Instrument Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery to see the portraits of musicians such as Elvis Costello, J. S. Bach, Fatboy Slim, Ludwig van Beethoven, Nick Cave, the Beatles and Handel.
