Description:
| London is home to some of the world’s finest theater and stagecraft, especially in the area of costuming.
On this program, you’ll not only learn the fundamentals of design, but also develop your understanding of what it is to design a play from conception to finish. You’ll also learn about the ways in which costumes can sculpt characters and the audience’s perception of them.
The program’s focus will be on the material origins and representations of various costumes for the stage. You’ll see professionally-produced plays, visit costumer exhibits (containing centuries-old clothing), and tour museum galleries full of actors’ portraits. In addition to reading and researching two period plays rich with English history, you’ll visit some of the locations that inspired them. And class discussions and lectures will help you put it all in the context of the particular challenges of costume design.
