Description:
| Siena, with its medieval character remarkably preserved, blends a rich cultural tradition with the ambiance of modern life. The city's narrow streets and quaint alleys lead to striking views of history, art, and folklore. Siena's location in central Tuscany is very convenient for excursions to Florence, Pisa, and Rome. The school of Italian Language and Culture for Foreigners, founded in 1917, will host the Winter Session Program in Italy.
Upon arrival in Italy, the winter session group and its director spend several days in the ancient capital city of Rome; past groups have been lucky enough to have a Papal audience at the Vatican. From Rome, the group typically takes a one-day excursion to Naples and/or Pompeii. A brief stop in Assisi is generally planned on the way from Rome to Siena. While in Siena, the group takes one-day excursions by bus to nearby cities, including Florence and San Gimignano, to further expose students to the artistic, cultural, and historic offerings of this ancient country. Visits to museums and other sites of interest in Siena itself are also planned.
During the Winter Session, students reside as a group in double rooms in a three-star hotel just outside the city walls of Siena. Bedding and linen are provided, as well as a small breakfast daily. Students are given a stipend to cover other meals and are welcome to make use of the moderately-priced university dining hall.
