Description:
| The People of India: The International Semester is an innovative way to study the world. As a participant in the Kotwara Project you will first take courses in Indian politics, history, economics, philosophy and/or language on the U of U campus. Then, you will travel to India where your classroom study will become a reality. Upon returning to campus, the remainder of your semester will be spent in follow-up coursework. The integration of coursework, travel, and service in India combine to make a meaningful educational experience. Kotwara is a small Muslim village in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, a largely Hindu region. The U of U’s service-learning program in Kotwara will give you the opportunity to meet and get to know people in the village, learning firsthand about their culture and their lives. The 2002 Kotwara project will be focused on building a school (a project that is near completion) and teaching local children.
You will begin your stay in New Delhi, the capital and political center of India. In addition to visiting important historical sites, the group will meet with Indian Government officials and other national figures. Next, you will spend a week living and working in Kotwara. Then, you will travel to Varanasi, a holy city of the Hindu religion. We will tour the city and take a boat up the Ganges river to a cremation site. During our stay at Varanasi, we will also visit Sarnath, the site of the first sermon delivered by the Lord Buddha. From Varanasi, we will travel to Agra to visit the Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal. | |
