Description:
| The Summer Program in Siena, established in 1972, was our first international summer program and has been the model for the other summer programs. Since its inception, over 2,950 students from across Canada have participated in the program. The praise for the program has been enthusiastic and consistent. One student wrote, "Absolutely brilliant. Everything about the program (the people, the course, the Palio, the trips) came together so nicely and made my experience in Italy utterly unforgettable." "Amazing! The trip of a lifetime...The people were great and fun, the course was full of interesting material, the city was beautiful and hospitable, we got to travel Italy. What more could you ask for (except sleep!)", said another. A third student wrote, "I loved my experience in Siena….Not to sound like a cliché, it was a life altering experience."
The Siena Program will be of particular interest to students specializing in Italian Language, Italian Culture & Civilization, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Political Science, Fine Art History, Business or History. The program will be an extraordinary academic and travel experience for students who would like to combine studying an elective course and travelling in Europe.
A rich selection of courses is offered: Conversation and Culture – An Introduction to Italian; Modern Italian Culture; Painting and Sculpture in Florence and Siena; Special Topics in International Management – Modern Business The European Perspective; the Civilization of Renaissance Europe and The Politics of Global Governance.
Historic Siena - A Great Place to Study!
"Siena opens up its heart to you more than any other" reads an inscription on Porta Camollia. This is definitely true. Walking the streets of the old quarter in Siena is like taking a step into the past. A walled city situated on three hills in the centre of the Tuscany region, Siena is an almost intact medieval city with its narrow streets and the unique, shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. Outside the old quarter, you will find everything from the lush green vineyards, valleys and wooded countryside to fumaroles and barren areas.
The sights and sounds of Siena will entertain and educate. In a city known for its art, you will undoubtedly visit the National Gallery, the Town Hall, the Cathedral and Cathedral Museum. Take time to stroll the medieval streets and visit the smaller galleries, museums, libraries and churches in the towns and villages scattered throughout Siena. The medieval and renaissance elements have been preserved throughout the centuries by the citizens of Siena and are beyond compare.
In addition to the sights, there are also a number of events to mark on your calendar. The most famous is the Palio, a spectacular bareback horse race preceded by colourful, historic parades and "festas", culminating in one of the oldest and largest street parties. It is an event you will not want to miss.
