Description:
| For centuries China shut herself off from the outside world, behind the Great Wall. More recently, during the Cold War, the Communist government's distrust of the capitalist West kept her a mystery to most non-Chinese. Now China is opening to the world and the undergoing rapid change. Students in the Semester in China program will have the opportunity to study both traditional and modern China, to experience life in its capital, Beijing, and to explore other areas of this fascinating country. Living and studying at the Beijing Institute of Technology allows students to interact with Chinese and foreign students, take advantage of the nearby National Library, sports facilities and parks, and visit important cultural and historical sites of the city.
Calvin College purses high quality academic study shaped by the Reformed vision of the historic Christian faith. The Semester in China program will allow students to observe and to participate in a society that barely tolerates Christianity and proclaims a totalitarian worldview. Students will be challenged academically and socially as well, as they live among Chinese and foreign students and learn Chinese from native speakers. We believe that students will come away with a better understanding of and appreciation for this ancient country, now emerging from its isolation and undoubtedly a major force in shaping the 21st century. | |
