Description:
| The City of a Hundred Spires, Prague rivals Paris and Venice in stunning physical beauty. With borders reopened in 1989, this city's Old World charm and impressive architecture-from Prague Castle to the fabulous Charles Bridge-again draw those once barred, and Prague is reestablished as an international crossroads and a sophisticated center of culture. Students have a vast array of affordable cultural activities to choose from: jazz and blues, opera, symphony orchestras, kammermusik, art museums, and an annual summer international film festival.
Just as important, Prague is a fascinating vantage point from which to study emerging European nations and issues of democratization. Visiting the campus of Charles University, founded in 1348, students will witness the traditions of one of Central Europe's oldest and most prestigious institutions. The program opens to them an absorbing international and intercultural perspective on a wide array of aesthetic, historical, political, and social issues. They will learn about life in Eastern and Central Europe both before and after the transition from communism to democracy. Students with broad interests in history and art-as well as those with specialized interests in criminology, international studies, political science, and humanities-are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. The program is not restricted to any particular major.
Coursework and excursions:
In courses taught by faculty from Charles University as well as from Florida State University, students garner a keen perspective on both timely and historical issues. Augmenting coursework are field trips to the city's many historical sites and museums, as well as excursions to other landmarks. Located in the heart of Central Europe, the Czech Republic shares borders with Germany, Poland, Slovakia, and Austria: multidirectional opportunities for students' personal weekend travel.
Housing:
Students typically stay in comfortable, suite-style dormitory accommodations-two single rooms with some shared facilities-centrally located in Prague. Breakfast is provided.
