Description:
| Paris. The word alone is evocative-of artists and intellectuals, queens and guillotines, cafés and haute couture, boulevards and gothic spires, existentialists and expatriates, Revolution and Resistance. Students in the summer Paris Program will be constantly discovering, learning about, and exploring the reality behind the romantic word.
Paris is different. And precisely this-living another culture's difference in language and daily life-is one of the enduring gifts of study abroad. In this intellectually stimulating city, students may develop their interest in French culture through the Intensive French Program, the Liberal Studies and Business Program, and the Graduate Law-Related Program.
Intensive French Program. This is an exceptional opportunity for intensive study of the nation's language and culture, possible through Florida State University's association with the Institut Catholique, one of Paris' most prestigious schools. Students are taught entirely in French by native French speakers, faculty who are specialists in teaching the language to foreign students. Courses in French civilization are also taught in French. Students enroll in the Institut Catholique through Florida State and receive up to nine hours of FSU credit. Students may enter at any level, from beginning to advanced. Classes are daily in the morning with an additional two afternoons a week, leaving time for city explorations. Students also tour City Hall and meet the mayor of Paris.
Liberal Studies and Business Program/Graduate Law-Related Program. In these study programs, students in a variety of disciplines can enhance their appreciation of the history, culture, and language of France within a total European context. For undergraduates, the Liberal Studies and Business Program includes courses focusing on commerce and international business. For graduate students, the courses in the Law-Related Program explore Western law from both current and historical perspectives. Classes are taught primarily in English. Both basic and intermediate French are offered. All courses-from essay writing to literature to business-are taught by Florida State University faculty with particular expertise in French and European art, economics, law, history, and ideas.
Excursions. Students in all programs participate as a group in excursions to cathedrals (Notre Dame and Chartres), to chateaux outside Paris (Fountainbleau or Vaux-le-Vicomte), and to other sites such as the Louvre, Balzac's house, Monet's home in Giverny, or the Loire Valley. For students' own explorations, the city is an inexhaustible resource of fascinating, course-related museums and landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Jeu de Paumes museum, Champs Élysées, and Arc de Triomphe.
Housing. Students are housed in single rooms in Cité Universitaire, an international campus built and maintained by countries from all over the world. All rooms have telephones, with baths and a kitchen on each floor of the dormitory | |
