Description:
| An ancient city that is now Spain's third largest, Valencia is an exhilarating mix of history, art, intellectual activity, and civic pride. Over 2,000 years ago, it flourished in the reign of Caesar Augustus. In the fifteenth and sixteen centuries, it wielded economic power throughout the Mediterranean. In the new millennium, it is consciously creating history with avant-garde architecture and universities.
This Hispanic culture's remarkable richness is everywhere visible in art and architecture reflecting Roman, Visigoth, Moorish, and Aragonese traditions. El Greco, Goya, and Velazquez; ancient Greek and Iberian ceramics; prehistoric fossils from archaeological finds: the city's many museums spread before students a dizzying panorama. Then there is the groundbreaking Ciutat des Artes-Europe's most ambitious melding of cultural, educational, and leisure activities. Well underway, when completed it will include the Museum of the Sciences, L'Hemisfèric cinema-planetarium, the Palace of the Arts, and a huge park and aquarium.
Florida State University is especially proud to place students in the heart of Spanish university life, on the campus of Universidad Politécnica and directly adjacent to the 500-year-old University of Valencia. Both institutions are completing entirely new campuses which are educational showplaces. At Universidad Politécnica, students' comfortable, full-service residence gives them access to all university services, from the library and computer lab to state-of-the-art sports facilities such as an enclosed Olympic pool, gymnasium with rock-climbing, and track and field. The city and its coast are at students' feet as well: a metro stop lies yards away, the beach less than a mile.
Coursework and excursions. Both Florida and Valencia faculty make possible basic liberal studies, courses focusing on Hispanic culture, and an Intensive Spanish track. The Spanish college setting is ideal for language study and practice.
Both local and more distant travel opportunities are abundant—and all relate in critical ways to academic study and class discussions. Most courses allow a three-day weekend for explorations of the nearby ancient Roman city of Sagunto or mountain towns such as Torres-Torres north of Valencia. In each term, students and faculty spend three to four days in Barcelona, enjoying excellent accommodations and a wealth of important sites: La Sagrada Familia, La Rambla, Güell Parc, and more. Fall and spring terms add excursions to Madrid.
Internship Program. Valencia offers internship positions in areas ranging from business to museums to social services to higher education. International Programs will also work with any qualified student to create an individualized internship. Note that intensive Spanish study is required as part of this internship program. Housing. Students' first-class residence facility is the Galileo Galilei, where they will enjoy a computer lab, a cafe | |
