Description:
| Too often the study of the arts in Africa fixes on traditional forms of tribal art. In-depth study of African contemporary arts and artists is neglected. This program, based in Johannesburg, remedies the neglect with concentrated study of several nationally known South African contemporary artists and art professionals. Open to both undergraduate and graduate students, the class combines formal presentations, informal seminars, meetings with important contemporary artists in southern Africa, and visits to their studios. Interaction between artists and students is a key element of the program. The artists will speak about their own work or research, and students will have the opportunity to question them about creative process, motivation, audience, and professional practice.
Professor Pat Ward Williams held a Fulbright Fellowship in Africa, establishing academic and professional relationships with a broad range of art-world specialists whose experience can deepen students' research-for example, art critics, members and directors of artists' collectives, administrators of governmental art commissions, and publishers of art books.
Coursework and excursions. The artists' interviews will be the basis of discussion sessions and written papers. In addition, art professors from the University of the Witwatersrand, Wits Technikon, Funda Community College in Soweto, and members of the cultural community of South Africa will be guest lecturers.
Students will be living in a key region of South Africa, Gauteng, where a majority of the population resides. Gauteng includes Johannesburg (the primary business, art, and cultural center of South Africa), Pretoria (the administrative capital), and Soweto (the township near Johannesburg populated by more than three million people). In addition, cultural trips to the painted houses of Ndebele Country, the Drakensburg Mountains, Sun City, and the region of Kwa-Zulu Natal are planned.
South Africa/Ghana Study Option. Students wishing to participate in both the Johannesburg, South Africa, and Accra/Kumasi, Ghana, programs may do so at a special price. The fee for the two-program option will include all transportation from South Africa to Ghana, as well as lodging and breakfast for the nine-day break between programs. Participants will have additional time to explore areas around Johannes- burg and Accra and will travel with the program director from South Africa to Ghana.
Housing. South Africa is a thoroughly modern country where amenities for living are close to those found in America. In Johannesburg, students will be housed in the Room with a View Hotel, situated in the trendy Melville section of Johannesburg and within walking distance of excellent food, shops, and entertainment. This modern, small hotel offers private bathrooms, in-room telephones, TV, maid service, and breakfast, as well as a conference room for meetings, critiques, and classes.
