Description:
| London is a fertile site for this in-depth art therapy program. The city's vast, accessible art collections, combined with art therapy's well-established status in England, offer participants an excellent educational mix of artifacts and experts. The courses are open to graduate students and to professionals seeking to meet continuing education or certification requirements. Visual symbols have communicated powerful messages throughout the history of most cultures-longer, in fact, than have written verbal symbols. Understanding visual symbols as they appear in art is seminal to the profession of art therapy. Identifying issues, working through conflicts, and finding resolutions to problems are at the core of the therapist's work. Cultural contexts of visual images, specifically those images held in high esteem by the group, become valuable references for looking at the ordinary as well as the atypical expressions of various groups of people. Yet individuals, because of cross-cultural experiences, often attach meaning to symbols from cultures other than their own. Finally, some images have such power that they transcend cultural boundaries and are present in many cultures. Those are particularly significant in discovering meaning through art forms. Through it all, personal meaning lies at the heart of visual expression and provides a pathway to understanding self and others.
The excellent collections at the Tate Museum and at the British Museum provide an extraordinary classroom without walls for the Art Therapy Program and specifically for the Interpretation of Symbols course. In this course, the content covers individual, cultural, and universal implications of symbols in art expressions, illuminated by the museum field trips and other experiential activities. A therapeutic focus expands study through the exploration of psychological frameworks, social contexts, and developmental references. In the art therapy course, lectures, readings, and supervised research will be enhanced through meetings with art therapists, guest lectures, and site visits to clinical and community settings.
Eligibility—The program is open to art education graduate students or graduate students in related disciplines.
