Description: The issues explored in this program have been discussed and debated for a number of years, particularly in the United Kingdom. The program not only gives students an opportunity to compare and contrast British and American viewpoints, but it does so within a European setting and with the aid of British intellectuals and professionals who are leading the investigations and programs. Students will add a new dimension to their study of social work and may discover fertile possibilities for collaborative research. The focus of the course Science, the Self, and Social Work Practice is the limited extent to which social workers employ and produce practice-based research. The course addresses the problem from a theoretical perspective, suggesting that it is an outgrowth of the philosophies which have shaped Western ideas of the self and of science's role in understanding human behavior. In examining this thesis, students will be introduced to philosophies of science and of social science and to continental philosophies (notably hermeneutics and phenomenology), with application to the efficacy of social work practice. Professors from the Centre for the Philosophy of Natural and Social Sciences at the London School of Economics will be invited to speak on some of these issues. In addition to an exam and final paper, students will engage in a critical debate on a controversial philosophic topic. A second course introduces the issues and methods of evaluation in social work, specifically comparing evaluative practices in the United Kingdom and the United States. Topics include the operational diagnosis of client problems; measurement and monitoring of symptoms, goals, and interventions; and analysis, interpretation, and reporting of case material. Particular attention will be given to measurement theory, psychometrics, and statistical evaluation of the validity of standardized instruments. Students will also consider evaluation in social work in its philosophical, ethical, and policy aspects. Among lecturers invited from the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) at the London School of Economics will be Dr. Martin Knapp, unit director. The PSSRU conducts research on public health, social care, mental health issues, and services for the aged. Eligibility—The program is open to social work undergraduate/graduate students or undergraduate/graduate students in related disciplines Information Subject to Change
