Description:
| Not all the children in these homes are orphans. Many have been taken into care, been abandoned or have been found living on the streets - occasionally involved in serious problems such as prostitution and drug abuse. They need a lot of care and attention.
In whichever placement you find yourself, you need to be ready for a challenge. Many of the children are desperate for attention and there will undoubtedly be children present who have psychological or physical health problems, who need special attention. Your main area of work will be helping with homework, crafts, music, art, sports - really anything you are interested in. You’ll also need to teach the importance of hygiene, self-discipline and good communication. Some children don't go to school so basic literacy lessons (in Spanish) are also welcomed - let us know beforehand if you can help in this area.
At some of the orphanages there is also a need for help with building and fixing up garden areas and playgrounds, as parts of the home are still under construction. Volunteers have been getting together once or twice a week to work on such community projects - painting walls in the orphanages, creating a garden or helping with clearing up and rebuilding.
Our staff in the Cochabamba office are happy to help you with ideas and materials, and day-to-day a member of staff at the home will act as your general supervisor. | |
