Description:
| South Africa is a country of dramatic change and optimism and this is reflected in the schools where we work. Based in the town of Barberton and in the nearby township of Emjindini, these schools find it hard to attract teachers away from the lifestyle and pay of the cities. Though under-funded and under-staffed, the schools are gaining a sense of hope for the future and, helped by the volunteers, an understanding of the world beyond their local region.
Barbeton has several schools, some of which are located in the 'township' area on the outskirts of the town. You can work with primary or secondary children so let us know your preference. Classes tend to be timetabled conversational English lessons, but you can always organise extra-curricular activities or assist with subjects such as maths if you ask. Being in the town means you are near to the local shops, transport links and other volunteers.
The children usually speak one of the tribal languages as their first language, so having a native English speaker is particularly helpful - you will probably find many of the teachers are also keen to practise their spoken English on you.
Your presence is vital to ensure this new generation of children from rural South Africa, have the skills, enthusiasm and aspirations to continue in education or improve their job prospects and opportunities in their towns and villages, and beyond. | |
