Description: You can expect to live in a little hut with close bathroom facilities on the site of the old elephant corral. You can work at the camp, talking to tourists about the elephants. You should be ready to work hard and accept less than comfortable conditions sometimes (mud, rain, bugs, etc.) but the atmosphere is very friendly and accepting. You MUST be able to accept and follow instructions EXACTLY concerning the elephants for your own and others safety. You will be working and living in very close or direct contact with the elephants. While this can be very exciting, you must be aware of the risk when being close to the largest, most powerful land animal on the planet - DO NOT underestimate their strength and do not overestimate your own. Elephants can easily be lethal. As we have only recently started to cooperate with the Ayutthaya Elephant Camp, the project is in need of almost everything: veterinary equipment, personnel and finances. Your participation will support the elephant camp and WARF’s work in two ways: both with the conservation of elephants and financially. One of your duties is to represent the camp to anyone who is curious: reporters, government officials, tourists, etc. Another major responsibility is to learn everything about elephant so that you can be an instrument in helping to save it. This includes daily care and riding- i.e. bathing, feeding, assisting the vet with treatments. Prior experience or knowledge about the Asian elephant is very useful. You will work under the supervision of staff at the project and the management of the Ayutthaya Elephant Camp, learning most things while doing them. If you are only available for a short period, you will only have limited contact with the elephants. If you are available for several months you can participate in activities in which you will have closer contact with the animals. When you have nearly completed studies for a degree in veterinary science or biology, may be able to assist the camp’s vet in his daily work.
